LYRICS > LOOK UP AND FLY AWAY (2019)

1. Rodeo
This is my first rodeo
Holding on tight to the rope
Don't know which way this will go
An aisle at the convenience store
Shoelace gray lottery floor
It feels like I’ve been here before
The clerk is a man behind glass
And behind his eyes is the past
And behind him the local news broadcast
There’re only two ways you can go
Away from or back to your home
So I picture a gigantic road
Where everyone walks to the sun, oh
This is my first rodeo
Holding on tight to the rope
Don’t know which way this will go
I happen on breakfast downstairs
My mom and my brother are there
The cinnamon toast in the air
The dogs are out back in the snow
The TV, the clock radio
Everything talks in its tone
As the months go I’ve zoomed too far in
These pages are pages I’ve read
And the places are places I’ve been
ohhhh…
And today is the same as the rest
But surer in shape nonetheless
So I stand up and drop off my plate
Push out the door to the front gate
An aisle on a bus out of town
I feel my feet moving me down
The bus lifting up off the ground
Then the plots come and go for a while
A parking lot fades into sight
The path to the beach in the streetlight
The door pulls the bus driver's hand
The curb pushes up to the sand
And I step into an alien land
Where the sandbrush and snowdunes descend
An ice water ocean begins
And I think I can see to the end
A wing in the light in the wind -
2. Bright as the Day
Out in the water with weeds in our hair
Whistling songs that we spun from the air
I saw the shape of a ghost in the waves
Dead as the sea foam, bright as the day
Bright as the day
Moved through the summers when we were young
Held to the fire, the weight of the sun
Lights on the fog over Bay of Bengal
I turned out and they stayed on
Bright as the day
Out in the backyard, earth in our teeth
Whistling songs that we learned in our sleep
I heard the sound of a ghost in the night
Scraped up dirt and monsoon skies
Over Kolkata I’m drifting alone
Naked and empty as the day I was born
Held to the fire, a moth in the flame
Dead as the sea foam and bright as the day -
3. Look Up and Fly Away
Catch some light, it’s a new day
I love you mom, but I can’t stay
I’ll see you when I’m older, older
I’m fighting for myself
Wait until you see it, see it
I’m fighting for myself
I’m fighting for myself
What’s a light without a way?
Once a life we’re warm and safe
I think I’m getting colder and colder
Oh mama that’s alright
Wait until you see it, see it
I’m gonna catch some light
I’m gonna catch some light
Sunny skies, look up and fly away
Paper rocket ships and aeroplanes
(hey hey hey hey)
Oh to be something that’s never been
(hey hey hey hey)
Oh to be someone who becomes something
Close my eyes, I’m at the finish line
Say goodbye, leave everything behind
(hey hey hey hey)
Oh the dream of falling back to sleep
(hey hey hey hey)
In the early morning, right before the
Sunlight shines right in your eyes
I was free and now I’m blind (ahhhhhh)
Shed some light, where does it hide away
When you find yourself stuck in a maze?
All your bright memories stow away
When your mind sets sail for another place
If I learn every inch and little turn
Will I wind up in places I don't recognize?
Will I follow every little protocol
Only to turn out to be, after all, alone...
Is it ever good to be lonely? (lonely)
Sometimes you're all on your own
Is it always wrong to be hopeless? (hopeless)
Hope, you know it comes and goes
Could it be good to be misunderstood?
Could it be good to be misunderstood?
Could it be good to be misunderstood?
Could it be good to be misunderstood?
I think I found my place
I love you mom, why can’t you stay?
I think I’m getting older, older
Just tell me it’s alright
Tell me can you see it, see it?
Someday we’ll catch some light
We’re gonna catch some light
Oooooooooooooooooh ahhhhh!

4. Heart Again
It was all at once, every sound and sight
When the days were loud, and the days were light
But the shadows fall and the chairs grow small
And I try to get back to the heart again
To the rightest row in the wild grove
To the brightest red in the dying glow
But the row and red disappear ahead
And I try to get back to the heart again
To another side of the earth entire
To the living trees standing in the fire
We amass and split, we grow old and sick
And I try to get back to the heart again
Does the railing run to a place I know?
Does a ghost remain when all the people go?
There's a secret tune dreams return me to
And I try to get back to the heart again

5. Paradise Bay
Little angels live on Hazel Island
Watching over the gates to our Paradise Bay
Narrows open up to open water
Where the sun is sinking into the lake
Still I see that green and silver lining
Though my mind has turned and drifted away
From there beneath the Great Bear and the maple
Where the moon is rising up from the grave
Time to time I’m casting a shadow
Time to time I’m lost in the day-to-day
And I’m coming up for air in Paradise Bay
Little angels live on Hazel Island
Buried deep, the gates to our Paradise Bay
Narrows open up to open water
Though my mind has turned and drifted away
